3 out of 5 stars More Like a Fanfic   May 22, 2010
Erika Perkins
I have read Return to Labyrinth volumes 2-3 but only about half of one.
The first volume was just so bad that I couldn't read it anymore. It was as if I were reading an amateur fanfic. The second volume honestly redeemed itself and seemed to improve a lot on the artwork and story. I didn't love it, but i didn't hate it either and I read that one all the way through. I didn't need to finish the first volume to know what was going on and I didn't lose any of the story.

Now as for this third volume......it was alright. not as good as the second volume, but it was interesting enough for me to finish it. It is interesting to see that *WARNING SPOILERS* Jareth gets his powers back and I'm curious to know what will happen between him and Sarah.
The story was just sort of....ahhhh...annoying. It didn't seem as long as Volume 2. And honestly the entire plot is very predictable I'm pretty sure I already know what's going to happen in Volume 4.

The artwork annoys me. I was soooo excited when i found out that the same woman who does Alichino did the cover art for Return to Labyrinth i was thinking she was goign to do all of the artwork. I was like WOW! AWESOME! She is the PERFECT artish for this manga!........I was sadly...and i mean SADLY dissapointed. volume 3 seemed rushed and I was dissapointed with it. I think I'll continue to volume four...but that's in august...i hate waiting... -_-

Anyway, if you're a fan of Labyrinth like I am i would read the mangas just for the pure sake of saying "yeah I read the mangas" but honestly....I'm sure I can find a better "fanfic" then this.

1 out of 5 stars No better than the first volume   January 17, 2010

I admit I bought all available volumes in one go without even reading the first one. That was a mistake. Going through all the volumes was painful. The plot had to be spoon fed to readers by having a cheap "sit down and explain everything" scene instead of letting the readers find everything out naturally because it wouldn't make sense and would be too difficult for the writer to be creative in that sense anyway. He's too busy shuffling us from one event to the next that you don't know where you are. The characters are all still face value. I didn't see any reason for growth in Toby. Somehow, I find it hard to think that his training in the goblin economics of money grubbing as character building. The art did not get any better in subsequent volumes either. The expressions on all the characters faces are so vague you'd think they were drugged or sleepy. Either that or they had a stroke and now have a lopsided disproportioned look to them instead. I don't believe for one second that Chris Lie did anything more on the artwork than glance over some interns shoulder and say "Good `nuf" and get paid. I'm sure that anything between Jareth and Sarah in the 4th volume will be anti climatic at best. The ending is sure to be a disappointment. I'll only get the 4th volume for the cover art.

4 out of 5 stars Excited but cautious   August 21, 2009

I first saw labyrinth in 6th grade and it has been one of my favorite childhood movies and will continue to be. I picked up this series for it's gorgeous cover art and I agree with everyone else, we pretty much got duped with the inside artistry. Other than that I'm loving the story for the Sarah/Jareth moments and the tension he obviously feels concerning her. Toby's story for me feels pretty secondary. I would be cautious though in assuming it's going to end up being Sarah/Jareth...I can see the storyteller having him help her find herself and her dreams without the need for reabsorbing Mogget, and it ending up not being a love story at all so much as the rescue of the decaying labyrinth and Jareth regaining his power through making Sarah remember her dreams. Who knows, but I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled a fast one. Things are not always what the seem. You can't take anything for granted. ^_~

2 out of 5 stars Not worth it   June 19, 2009

This is really no work of art. The artwork is nothing special (at all), and the story seems to have been written by a 15-year old. It does not really develop the relationship between Jareth and the girl, the protagonists here are mostly new, and very bidimensional. I bought all three volumes because I really liked the movie. Big mistake.
People seem to have liked this volume better, yet it is part of the collection and still not very good, just slightly better than the previous one. Jareth comes back with a little mystery, but if you're looking for a sequel or development of Labyrinth's story and magic, this is not it.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the others in the series   June 15, 2009

For anyone who's been paying attention to this series from the beginning knows that it took the writers and artists just over a year between the first and second mangas. But this one took just under 2 years! With the amount of time they took I thought this one was going to be great, especially after the second one! I was sadly mistaken.

Personally I didn't think this one was that good. The artistry really lacked, more than usual, and it was very obvious compared to the second manga. It didn't seem like they really knew how to put this one together. Such a short amount of things happened but took so long to get around to. It also didn't feel believable like the others, meaning it was much harder to really be drawn into the story.

The one thing that just kept bugging me what how Jareth was drawn, and while he's not the main character in this series, he still greatly matters. There were times that he actually looked, well, fat! Like he'd randomly been squashed down and got a beer belly, or the cloths looked cheap. It was odd.

It saddens me that the third one didn't live up to it's previous mangas and I have a bad feeling it'll be a while til the final one. I would give this one 3 1/2 stars if possible because I certainly have read worse, and this wasn't terrible, just not as good as the others. If the last one looks and feels as bad as this one I fear it may kill a great story.
